Open Tunings for Guitar with Pat Higgins

Open Tunings for Guitar with Pat Higgins

To discover a new continent - we must first lose sight of the shore.

Standard tuning allows playing in many keys, but does not provide access to the modal sound that open tunings provide.

That harp-like sound is the other distant shore, and to get there we have to abandon the familiar and adopt an elastic mental approach.

Workshop will cover:

- Chord Building for accompaniment of vocals - find a note on the bass and then stack a major 3rd and a minor third (Root 3rd 5th) to find chords.

- Parallels (treble & bass frets same note an octave apart)

- “Slidable” chords.

- Major & Minor: One fret on a string makes the chord major or minor for that tuning (find it)

- Chord Scales are a great starting point.

Figure out how Joni, Martin, Nick and Paul got their sound!

Open tunings deliver a huge compelling “free” sound often with simple two-finger chords - Together we can reach that other shore.
