Dave Flynn

Described as ‘a masterful guitarist’ in Sing Out! Magazine, Dave Flynn is internationally recognised for holding ‘a unique place in the world of music’ (Martin Hayes – The Gloaming)
Flynn’s unique style draws on his experience in many different styles including classical, folk, jazz and popular music.

Flynn has appeared in prestigious venues including MoMa (New York), Moscow Cathedral and Ireland’s National Concert Hall. He has toured Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Europe often performing at festivals like The Nuertingen International Guitar Festival, The Guitar Festival of Ireland, Dundee Guitar Festival and Moscow Christmas Festival.

His compositions have been performed by renowned guitarists including Craig Ogden, John Feeley, Clive Carroll and the Dublin Guitar Quartet and some of the world’s top classical ensembles including the Prague Chamber Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, New Juilliard Ensemble, Smith Quartet, Vanbrugh Quartet, the Con Tempo Quartet and his own ensemble the Irish Memory Orchestra.

Flynn’s first solo guitar album, Contemporary Traditional Irish Guitar, received critical acclaim for fusing classical guitar and Irish music.

His second solo guitar album ‘Winter Variations’ showcased his skills as an improvising composer/guitarist ‘Irish guitarist Dave Flynn’s Winter Variations just released is a bit of a discovery, Flynn’s style is eclectic drawing on a range of music’s including Irish traditional music, and pastoral American jazz influences be they Pat Metheny or Bill Frisell, with hints of African music and the minimalism of Steve Reich sewn in for good measure.’ ( Dave Flynn is also an award-winning chamber musician having performed with such groups as The Crash Ensemble, The Cosmopolitan Guitar Quartet and The Dublin Guitar Quartet, whom he co-founded. In this capacity he has premièred works by composers including Michael Gordon, Roland Dyens, Kevin Volans and Philip Glass.

2017 marked Dave’s 40th birthday year with events around the world scheduled including another Japanese tour, the premiere of his Memory Symphony by the Irish Memory Orchestra in Dublin, the release of a 3 volume compilation ‘Genre Jumping’ on Frisbee Records and Mel Bay will publish his complete works for solo guitar.

Dave plays a nylon string guitar custom made by the German Luthier Friederike Linscheid. His music is published worldwide by Mel Bay, Reed Music and Frisbee Publications.
