Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers,
Imagine this if you will... you're in a small town dancehall, sometime in 1930s Texas. It's hot, the beer and the bourbon are flowing, and it's packed to the rafters with people wanting to dance away the hard times. All that's needed is the music to get them moving. Thankfully, Dev'lish Mary and her Lame Horse Layabouts are here, tuning up their instruments for an evening's wild and raucous country dance music. Blending foot-stomping Western Swing tunes with Gypsy Jazz stylings, fiery fiddle tunes and a few slow-dance torch songs, they'll have you smiling and swirling till you collapse in a dishevelled heap on the sawdust floor.
Dev'lish Mary (that's Miss Anita Clark to you) will be sawing up a Kansas summer storm on her fiddle, and stealing your heart with her soaring, sultry singing. She'll be ably assisted by John 'Boy' Sneddon, thumping and slapping his Grandaddy's big double bass, and Simon Gregory, plucking and strumming on his shiny red guitar like a man possessed.
After a hard day in the cotton fields or the telegraph office, this is what everyone's been waiting for, to hear the hot new musical styles of the '30s, and forget their woes for one more evening... Dev'lish Mary and the Holy Rollers are here to play for you.
Jillie and Christopher
Christopher and Jillie have been singing together for 5 years now, initially in the Gospel choir "Bright On Vibes", then in A Capella groups, "Quintessence", and "A Bit On The Side". Forming an A Capella duo ("Take Two"), they performed at a wide variety of events over these 5 years, including festivals, garden parties, cabarets, and some more intimate private house concerts. Their musical background includes Jazz, Folk, World, Gospel, Blues, and they founded and co-led a community Gospel/World Spiritual choir, "Jabulani", which Jillie continues to lead. Both have since established their own community choirs and also perform with the band "NoBanjo".
Peter Mayes was first introduced to Folk Dance in 1953. Within 5 years he was a joint leader of the local Folk Dance Club. In the following years, he attended courses, given by teachers who had been taught by Cecil Sharp. Over the years he developed a teaching style of his own, including many ideas from other teachers. For 21 years he led the Eastbourne Folk Dance Club as well as starting the Eastbourne International Folk Festival, the National Youth Folklore Troupe and Hobby Horse Club of England, for 8 to 13 year olds, led many Folk Camps in UK and Germany. He is also a self taught accordionist and has led workshops and bands at Festivals and for Barn Dances.
He started or took part in a number of display teams in an effort to bring ‘Folk’ to the public at large. Now he is struggling to play the Northumbrian Pipes.
Denny Stanway will be running a workshop on finding the confidence to compere.
